General James Longstreet Group of
General James Longstreet Group of Five CDVs Lot includes four different common Anthony/Brady views of General Longstreet in uniform with a scarce post-war view in civilian clothes taken soon after the war. Three of the military views are engravings and one is a copy shot. None are autographed. ''Old Pete'' became a Major General in October 1861 and gained accolades commanding a division in 1862. With the Army of Northern Virginia??Ts reorganization Longstreet assumed command of the vaunted First Corps and could claim a large share of the victory at Fredericksburg. He was detached at Suffolk early in 1863 and missed the fighting at Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg Longstreet led the right wing and vehemently protested Lee's decision to attack with Pickett??Ts Division on July 3. Post-war many blamed Longstreet for the defeat although Lee never publicly lost confidence in his old ''war horse.'' The later hollow victory at Chickamauga can largely be credited to Longstreet but Army of Tennessee politics and a burning desire for independent command found him cast-off in charge of the dismal Knoxville Campaign during the winter of 1863-4. Longstreet gratefully returned to Lee in time to engineer a bold counterattack at the Wilderness on May 6 1864 where he was severely wounded. Longstreet returned to corps command at the end of the war and surrendered at Appomattox. ?Old Pete? remained the most visible Confederate luminary in the highly charged post-war examination of the causes leading to defeat. Longstreet died in 1904 and cast a long shadow as the last of the Confederate high command. Condition: Cartes are uniformly G+. showing minor edge wear and soiling.

Marine Corps Battle Report on
Marine Corps Battle Report on Attack on Pensacola Florida 1861 3pp DS dated U.S. Flag Ship "Colorado" 14 Sept. 1861. The battle report of the pre-dawn raid on Confederate-occupied Pensacola Navy Yard and destruction of the rebel privateer William H. Judah signed by Captain Edward McDonald Reynolds USMC commander of the Marine detachment of USS Colorado to Lt John H. Russell USN overall commander of the expedition.U.S. Flag Ship "Colorado"14. Sept. 1861?SirCommanding twenty Marines two Sergeants two corporals sixteen Privates engaged in the late attack on a Battery and Schooner belonging to the enemy at the Navy Yard Pensacola to you as commanding the Expedition I have the honor to report as follows.Under my immediate command in the 1st Launch were one Sergeant one Corporal & eight Privates. The launch having been laid alongside the Schooner under a shower of musketry from that vessel and shore we were ordered to board. The order was immediately obeyed the Marines firing their Muskets at the enemy's deck then fixing bayonets mingling with the sailors rushed to the Schooner's side all attempting to gain the deck. The crowd was so energetic and enthusiastic in the assault that but few could succeed. Orderly Sergt. Fitzsimmons was one of the few as likewise Privates Smith and O'Dowd. The enemy fled to the shore and being joined by other Troops a deadly unremitting fire was opened upon us. The object of firing the intended Privateer having been accomplished all were recalled to our boat and still under a heavy fire we retired.I regret the loss of Private Smith by a sabre bayonet wound received on the Schooner and call attention to the fact of himself & Private O'Dowd (seriously wounded); these two with a sailor being the first on the Enemy's deck.I also call attention to Orderly Sergeant Fitzsimmons marked by displaying great coolness with effective fire; also to Sergeant Gallagher the stock of whose musket was shattered in his hand by a ball while at "a ready" but who fired his charge with the utmost coolness.Others were distinguished by gallantry particularly Private Hartman reported by Midshipman Steece; but where all assisted by their best effort it is difficult to particularize. As to the movements of the second Division of one Sergeant one Corporal & eight Privates in Lieut. Blake's Boat the report of that officer will no doubt explain. The following is a report of the killed and wounded in the Marine Command: viz Private John Smith - Killed?" ?Savillan Coburn - severe contusion?" ?Terrance O'Dowd - severely wounded?" ?Chas. Canberry - ??????? " ???????????? "besides having received a severe contusion of shoulder myself.Very respectfullyYour obedtLieut. J.H. Russell ??????????? ??????????? ??????????? ??????????? ?E. McDonald ReynoldsU.S. Navy??? ??????????? ??????????? ??????????? Capt. Commdg Marines "Colorado"A third page of the document gives the rosters of the two launches involved one commanded by Lt. Russell the other by Lt. Blake. At 3 A.M. on September 14 1861 four boats of Marines and sailors wearing white hats to distinguish themselves from the Rebels in the night-time assault attacked the Navy Yard in Confederate-held Pensacola. Two boats were tasked with neutralizing the Rebel artillery battery protecting the Navy Yard with the other two assigned the destruction of the Judah which had recently run the blockade into Pensacola with war material from Canada and was being armed as a privateer. They faced approximately 1000 Confederate soldiers from the Pensacola garrison charged with guarding the ship and Navy Yard. The first force surprised the defenders of the artillery battery killing the lone sentry in the emplacement. They spiked the large gun (a 10-inch Columbiad ) bringing the tampion back as a trophy. The boats attacking the Judah were detected shortly before reaching the vessel and the privateer's 75 crew opened fire. The alerted defenders converged on the scene from around the Navy Yard and began a savage fire from the wharf and shore. The US Marines and sailors drove the Rebel defenders from the ship's deck in hand to hand combat then under fire spread flammables on and below decks setting the ship ablaze. ?They withdrew under heavy attack suffering 3 dead and 13 wounded. Unable to stop the fire the Confederates watched as the Judah engulfed in flames drifted opposite Fort Barrancas and sank. Marine John Smith was killed when he lost his white hat in the dark and was mistakenly bayoneted by one of his comrades. Admiral David Dixon Porter in his Naval History of the Civil War called this action at Pensacola without doubt the most gallant cutting-out affair that occurred during the war.
