MARCUS GLENN MIXED MEDIA - "ACE,
MARCUS GLENN MIXED MEDIA - "ACE, YOUR CREATIVITY" 2016Marcus Glenn (American, b. 1968). "Ace, Your Creativity" mixed media painting with resin on board, 2016. Hand-signed in pigment on the lower right by the artist. A wonderful mixed media painting with a clever title - "Ace, Your Creativity" - by African-American artist, Marcus Glenn. The composition references various arts in its iconography - both musical and visual - by including an acoustic guitar, a trumpet, piano keys, as well as a brush and palette. In addition, floral motifs, butterflies, and bumblebees reference the beauty of the natural world. At the center of it all is a wine bottle decorated with two aces of spades on its labels, capturing the spirit of the piece's title. Finally, the watch at the lower right, just above the artist's signature, suggests one should seize the day rather than wait to pursue one's artistic passions. Carpe Diem! Size of painting: 27.25" L x 21.5" W (69.2 cm x 54.6 cm) Size of frame: 41.375" L x 35.5" W (105.1 cm x 90.2 cm)
Marcus Glenn is a native of Detroit, home to Motown and certainly known as a major center for music. While not a musician himself, Glenn is inspired by music, particularly jazz. His father introduced him to this music, and Glenn remembers marking moments in time by the tunes they listened to. Years later, he would draw upon these memories when creating his artwork, capturing visions of the instruments in a creative, improvisational manner like a jazz musician. Glenn's work has been collected internationally, and the 2014 Grammy Awards chose his piece entitled, "One Nite Outta This World" as its offical artwork.
