(3) Provenance: Estate of Ronald Sperling Literature: Leone Fischer (Bentley) Nicholson, active at Newcomb College (1908-1929). Founded on the work she exhibited in 1907, The Arts & Crafts Society in Boston awarded her the prestigious designation of Master Craftsman'. Based on this honor, Leone became the first woman of New Orleans to receive this title. Traditionally at Newcomb College Pottery, men shaped and fired pottery, producing blank ceramic forms for female students to decorate. This hand-built piece by Leone Nicholson demonstrates an advance in the social hierarchy and progress in the social experiment originally designed to teach young Southern women how to support themselves financially solely as artists not artisans.
