De Romanorum magnificentia et
De Romanorum magnificentia et architectura by Joannis-Baptistae Piranesi Rome: 1761. Large folio with thick paper, sheets apprx 23-1/2" x 17", cord bound in partial vellum and paper board book. From the ex-libris of George Loch. Apprx 211 numbered pages. Plates not present; only pages 118 and 119 have an apprx 7-5/8" x 11-1/2" plate each, but there in the front engraved portrait of the Pope and several devices and ornate title page. The leading engraver of Rome was Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778). Between 1748 and 1774, he produced quantities of magnificent etchings of Roman antiquities and monuments, which were immensely popular with 'grand tourists'.

Francesco Piranesi (Italian 1756-1810) Raccolta de' Tempi Antichi 1780 Rome Part One with title frontispiece preface text with 19 (of 21) plates lacking 3 & 5 ten are double-page includes the famous view of the Temple of Sibyl along with the similarly large view of the capital and entablature of that structure loose in a modern green cloth-covered portfolio with ties. Note: Francesco Piranesi eldest son and heir of Giovanni was but 20 years old at the time of his father's death in 1778. He produced this first part of a projected volume on temples quickly to assure his position. The plates on the temple of Sibyl are brilliantly conceived and project the son's considerable talent.

Condition:
1st item is affixed to canvas support to stabilize 14" tear along platemark at right. With mat burn, foxing, and toning. 2nd item with unobtrusive foxing. The central crease has been stabilized with tape en verso. Both with wide margins.

PAIR OF 1778 PIRANESI ROMAN ARCHITECTURAL ENGRAVINGSTwo double-page engravings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) from his Vasi, Candelabri, Cippi, Sarcofagi, Tripodi, Lucerne, ed Ornamenti Antichi (pub. 1778), depicting elements of classical Roman architecture and decorative arts. Each are nicely presented in gilt frames.
The first is titled "A Sua Eccellenza Il Signor Aubreii Beauclerk..." (plate 72). The plate measures 26 1/2" x 17", in a frame that measures 35" x 25 1/2".
The second is titled "Profilo di una Nave antica di marmo a tre ordini di remi..." (plate 105). The plate measures 25 3/4" x 16", and the frame measures 35" x 25".
Provenance: The Webster House collection.
Condition
Each sheet is creased around the centerfold (as expected). There is a small amount of foxing to the top right corner of "A Sua Eccellenza". There is a small amount of overall toning to each sheet, commensurate with age.
