Neopolitan School (19th Century) Bay of Naples with Vesuvius in the Distance. Gouache on artist's board, approx. 20" x 29" oval sight size, matted and framed in a gold metal leaf frame with applied floral ornamentation under glass overall approx. 24-1/2" x 33-1/2". A very popular subject of the 1880's, this panoramic scene depicts the sleeping volcano with a white plume in the distance with the buildings lining the bay in a grand swoop. The foreground is a Neopolitan pastoral scene with figures, giving scale and furnishing grounding to the composition.

Vertunni Roma, l.l. 39 x 77 in., frame: 55 x 94 in. Provenance: A New England Institution. Other Notes: Achille Vertunni, a Neapolitan painter who moved to Rome in 1853, is best known for his romantic landscape depictions of ancient ruins. This was a popular genre at the time, due in large part to the Grand Tour enthusiasm for the subject matter. In this work, Vertunni depicts the ruins of the important ancient Greek town of Paestum, on the Tyrrhenian sea in present day Southern Italy. The three well-preserved Doric temples seen in the painting date to 550-450 BC. Two are dedicated to Hera (Juno) and one to Athena (Minerva). Condition: Condition: "As-is" - areas of flaking paint, particularly along lower left edge; scattered restoration throughout.
