NC POTTERY, MARK HEWITT JARDINERE Wood-fired salt-glazed stoneware, applied ribbon band below the rim, the tapered body is decorated with four bands of concentric inscribed lines, dark vertical glaze runs extend from the top to an impressed diamond above the base, underside is stamped with the potter's glyph.

Three bottles, mug: one salt-glazed stoneware, cylindrical body, tapered shoulder with "JC" in cobalt, American or Continental, probably 19th century, 10-1/4 in., several small rim chips ; salt-glazed stoneware ink bottle with pouring spout, marked on side "P&J Arnold, London, England" with other marks, 7-1/4 in., excellent condition ; redware mug, tapered cylindrical shape with strap handle and incised rim decoration, origin unknown, 19th century, 6-1/4 in., good condition with normal base wear, minor base chips ; pale green mold-blown glass apothecary bottle with remnants of paper label "Sodae et Pot: Tart:", probably French, 19th century, 9-1/2 in., lacking stopper, remnants of contents , (four pieces). Deaccessioned from MESDA and Old Salem to benefit the Acquisition Fund.

RARE HOLY LAND POTTERY JUG W/ PAINTED MOTIFSAncient Near East, Holyland, Levant, Iron Age I, ca. 1200 to 1000 BCE. A stunning pottery jug presenting a flared rim, a narrow neck, a broad shoulder, and a bulbous body, all sitting atop a petite, discoid foot. Boasting black on red decoration, the exterior is adorned with a large, horizontal band of spiral motifs around the center of the body flanked by several straight and wavy horizontal striations above and below, as well as a starburst design around the neck. A bifurcated, ribbon-form handle connects rim to shoulder, also showcasing a black-painted pattern of horizontal stripes. Size: 4.5" Diameter x 6.2" H (11.4 cm x 15.7 cm); 7.2" H (18.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition:
Repaired from a few large pieces with restoration and repainting over some break lines, while other break lines are visible. Minor loss to small area of rim. Expected nicks, chips, abrasions, and pitting throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with nice remaining pigment and rich earthen deposits. Collection labels on underside of foot.
