Framed.* Signed Walinska l.r. Charcoal on pink paper; apparently in good condition. Framed.* Dimensions: Sight size: 24-1/2 x 19 in (62.2 x 48.3 cm) Provenance: Atelier Walinska Inc., New York Sold in these rooms, Capital Collections Estate Auction, March 3, 2017, lot 136 Note: This work by Anna Walinska appears as an homage to the works of artists such as André Lhote and Pablo Picasso, reflecting her admiration of them during her time in Paris circa 1926-1930. The London-born daughter of Russian immigrants, raised in New York City, Walinska travelled to Paris at the age of 20. There she took up residence around the corner from Gertrude Stein and found her calling. She honed her skill under Lhote at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and exhibited original work at the Salon des Indépendents. Musicians is an excellent example of the beginnings of her personal style and what she dubbed her "calligraphy of line," developed working alongside artists like Frantisek Foltyn. This subject would remain one of Walinska's favorites throughout the years and demonstrates the influence of the musicians in her Paris circle, most notably Schoenberg and Poulenc. In 1935, determined to bring the French sensibility to the New York art world, she opened the Guild Art Gallery and staged the first New York City solo exhibition of Arshile Gorky's work. Walinska was not only a pioneer among post-WWII Modernists, she blazed the trail for many female artists and gallerists who came after her.

- Fine George III Wakelin & Taylor Sterling
Fine George III Wakelin & Taylor Sterling Silver Fruit Basket, hallmarked London 1779-1780, of oval form with pierced gadrooned sides below a pierced wavy rim, mounted on the ends with finely detailed stag handles and on the sides with ribboned circular cartouches, raised on four hoof feet, engraved on one cartouche with the Stuart crest and motto and the other with the arms of Stuart of Bute and, on an escutcheon of pretence, Bertie, h. 3-1/2", l. 9-3/4", w. 5-3/4", 20.38 t. oz.. The arms here are those of Lt. Gen. Sir Charles Stuart, K.B. (1753-1801). The fourth son of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute and his wife Mary Montague, Stuart entered the army at the age of fifteen and in 1777 was made lieutenant-colonel of the 26th foot, with which he served in the American Rebellion. He was rapidly promoted among the ranks, serving in Corsica and Portugal. In 1798 he was made Lieutenant-General and reclaimed Minorca from the Spanish without the loss of a single life. In gratitude he was invested with the Order of Bath and made Governor of Minorca. He served briefly again in Malta, and died on March 25, 1801. While on a visit home during his service in the American Rebellion, he married Anne Louisa Bertie, 2nd daughter and co-heir of Lord Vere Bertie, on April 19, 1778. The date of this basket would suggest it was part of a service purchased as the newlyweds established their household. This model of basket - usually accompanied by a matching stand - was a popular one for the Royal Goldsmiths John Wakelin and William Taylor (fl. 1776-1792); sets with the arms of John, 4th Earl of Poulett and Philip, 5th Earl of Chesterfield are known.
