SCOTTISH GEORGIAN ROYAL COAT OF
SCOTTISH GEORGIAN ROYAL COAT OF ARMS, JOHN STEELLA monumental Scottish Georgian grey painted Royal Coat of Arms Sir John Steell RSA, Edinburgh first half 19th century Signed J Steell / Edn. height 59in (150cm); width 93in (236cm); depth 21in (53cm)Provenance: Property from a Collector, New York City.Footnote: Sir John Robert Steell RSA (18 September 1804 - 15 September 1891) was one of thirteen children born to John Steell senior (1779-1849), a carver and guilder, and Margaret Gourlay. Steell initially followed his father, training to be a carver himself, being apprenticed in 1818. Working with his father, his first major commission came in 1827 when the North British Fire Insurance Company commissioned a huge timber statue of St Andrew to be placed on the outside of their office. His first work to attract international attention was Alexander taming Bucephalus carved in 1832-33 (cast in bronze in 1883, and now standing in the quadrangle of Edinburgh City Chambers). Around 1838 he was appointed as Sculptor to Her Majesty the Queen, a post which was later recognized as part of the Royal Household in Scotland. In 1840 he opened Scotlands first foundry dedicated to sculpture, on Grove Street in Edinburgh, to cast his model of the Duke of Wellington. Steell frequently exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy in London. He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1876 following the unveiling of his statue The Prince Consort, an equestrian depiction of Prince Albert, which stands in the center of Charlotte Square in Edinburgh. Steells best known pieces include the statue of Sir Walter Scott sitting with his dog Maida under the Scott Monument, carved 1840-46 from a single 30 ton block of Carrara marble; a stone statue of Queen Victoria on top of the Royal Scottish Academy, 1844 and a bronze equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington outside Register House in Edinburgh, 1852. Steel also produced several likenesses of Robert Burns, national poet of Scotland among many other works.

A LATE 19TH-CENTURY GILT-COPPER
A LATE 19TH-CENTURY GILT-COPPER ELECTROTYPE TANKARD Elkington Mason & Co. of Birmingham circa 1860, of cylindrical form, with S-scroll handle, the hinged lid with baby Bacchus finial, after a 17th-century ivory tankard with silver mounts, representing the drunken Silenus, scroll handle and baby Bacchus finial, the underside inscribed 'From the original ivory in the possession of Henry Bedford Esqr, executed by Elkington Mason & Co. 1348'Height: 29cmNote:The Victorian era brought much invention and discovery, both industrial and for the arts. The firm Elkington & Co. were the epitome of innovation and were at the forefront of developments of electro-metallurgy.Elkington & co. honed their skills to create electroplate masterpieces and in particular electrotype facsimile copies of museum quality artefacts. They were also the only British company to consistently win the highest awards at all seven of the International Exhibitions held from 1851-1878.Founded by cousins, George Richards Elkington and Henry Elkington, and financed by the steel pen magnate Josiah Mason the company formed a relationship with the pre-cursor to the Victoria and Albert Museum, the South Kensington Museum to produce facsimile copies of museum artefacts for educational purposes known as a ‘type pattern’.In order to re-produce these type patterns, a mould is first made of the original piece and then sprayed with a silver paint to help conduct electricity, dipped in a solution with copper wires this first helps connect the copper and then the silver. The complex process produces a product that can be handled and examined for further research.Elkington & Co. was a commercial enterprise and did sell their electrotype wares. The Bedford tankard was the third project between the South Kensington Museum and Elkington & Co. It is the only known example where the name of the owner was credited on the piece. Various options were provided for the tankard with entirely copper costing 7l 7s to gilt or parcel gilt with a price of 10l 10s.Francis Bedford (1815-1894) loaned the 17th-century tankard to the museum in 1854. He was the founder of the Photographic Society of London (later the Royal Photographic Society), Prince Albert had commissioned him to photograph items in the Royal Collection and even purchased an image of the tankard taken by Bedford which still resides in the Royal collections today RCIN 2906112. The Bedford family were primarily civil servants, but their link to Sir Horace Walpole (1717-1797) might explain their interest in the arts. Horace was the youngest son of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain's first Prime Minister. His house Strawberry hill in Sussex became a living museum itself encompassing Renaissance maiolica, Holbein drawings, arms and armour among other collections. Bedford consequently was keen for further investigation on his museum worthy tankard. The purpose of their exercise was to provide educational tools, but with Elkington's success, they began to use the elements of the original 'type patterns' such as a handle, for other designs. This created a conflict of interest and may have been a contributing factor to why the relationship ended. There is today still a silver-gilt mounted ivory tankard carved with the same version of the Silenus story but with a different finial, in the Victoria & Albert Museum (accession number 880-1882), from the bequest in 1882 of John Jones, and is on display in the Whitely Galleries. More recent research has deemed that Ivory drum attributed to Flemish Baroque sculptor François Duquesnoy is now thought to be Augsburg Germany.Lots 3 and 4 offer an interesting insight into the Victorian period where the commercial industrial drive meets the desire to improve social and public order.

DAVID WATSON STEPHENSON, ARSA (SCOTTISH 1842-1904)
PAIR OF WHITE MARBLE FIGURES FROM SIR WALTER SCOTT'S 'THE FAIR MAID OF PERTH' in white marble, the first titled 'The Fair Maid of Perth', on a circular plinth base signed 'D.W.STEVENSON, ARSA, SC, EDN 1876'; the other figure titled 'The Glee Maiden', similarly signed and dated 1878, with a pair of metal mounted revolving ebonised pedestals(2)100cm high, 32cm diameterProvenance: The Ashley Hall Collection: By order of The Trustees of the J. Porter Trust & The Executors of the late Leonard RawcliffeNote: David Watson Stevenson was a successful Scottish sculptor who studied in Rome and apprenticed under the sculptor William Brodie. He worked as an assistant to the eminent sculptor Sir John Steell, contributing figures to the Prince Albert monument in Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, as well as numerous public and private commissions. He became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and is best remembered for his most famous sculpture, the bronze figure of William Wallace on the National Wallace Monument, Stirling. The Fair Maid of Perth was written by Sir Walter Scott in 1828 and is one of the Waverly novels. It was inspired by the strange but historically true tale of Battle of the North Inch set in Perth and other parts of Scotland around 1400. Stevenson has chosen to depict two of the youthful female characters: Catherine Glover, the ingenue and one of the central figures of the tale, and Louise, a young French minstrel.

VICTORIAN, LOVE NECKLACE, CA. 1840 - 1850Victorian, Love Necklace, ca. 1840 - 1850, 15-18 karat gold, emerald, diamond, ruby necklace featuring concealed memento overall weight: 24.10 grams 13 emeralds ranging in size from 2.5 x 2.1 mm to 1.5 x 1 mm 20 diamonds ranging in size from 1.7 x 1.5 mm to 1 x 1 mm 2 rubies approximately 1.7 x 1.7 mm While gifting jewelry is a time-honored custom, its heyday was during the Victorian Era (1837 - 1901) in British history, which coincided not only with the Romantic movement (1837 - 1860) in literature and the arts, bu also with Queen Victoria's happy marriage to Prince Albert. At that time, hair was reminder of love and friendship and could last a long time if well preserved. Between 1837 - 1901, hair within jewelry and hair work art was extremely popular. Victoria and Albert set the fashion world on its head by exchanging locks of hair in 1839. Victoria blushingly declared that she wore Albert's in a locket at her neck, "night and day". The Victorians also associated the snake motif with eternal love, and Queen Victoria put snake jewelry under the fashion spotlight when Prince Albert bought her a snake engagement ring, with an emerald (her birthstone) embedded into it, accenting the creature's head. Lot 231 is a striking example from this period and bears a tiny lock of hair under glass on the back of the locket. It was recently presented to the Antiques Road Show and will appear in an episode due to air in the Spring of 2023. (Gere, Charlotte, and Rudoe, Judy.
