SIGNED NORVAL MORISSEAU
SIGNED NORVAL MORISSEAU SILKSCREEN - PRODIGAL SON, 1975...Norval H. Morrisseau (Ojibway, 1932-2007). "Prodigal Son" silkscreen in colors, 1975, ed. 3/99. Signed, numbered, and titled in pencil on lower left. A striking piece by Ojibway artist Norval Morisseau presenting a magnificent figure in profile delineated in Morisseau's signature bold style and color palette. Morisseau was living on the north shores of Lake Superior in Canada when he began painting in 1959 following a vision that instructed him to do so. His artworks blend Ojibway heritage with the teachings of Catholicism which he was exposed to as a youth. A beautiful silkscreen by Norval Morisseau who has been dubbed the Picasso of First Nations Artists! Size: 25.625" L x 19.1" W (65.1 cm x 48.5 cm)
According to the Norval Morisseau Estate website, "Norval Morrisseau, CM RCA (March 14, 1932 - December 4, 2007), referred to as 'Copper Thunderbird' is considered the grandfather of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada. He is heralded as 'the key figure at the center of an indigenous art movement in Canada' by the National Chief of Assembly of First Nations and is the only Native Artist to have a solo exhibition by the National Gallery of Canada.
Morrisseau shattered societal, sexual, and commonly held stereotypes and prejudices in the 1960s. In the face of intense discrimination, He created a style that was all his own, an artistic vocabulary that inspired a new art movement. He founded the Woodlands School of Art and was a prominent member of the 'Indian Group of Seven'. In 1978, He was made a Member of the Order of Canada, a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and was honored with a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award during the NAAF Awards show in 2008."

FLEMISH BIBLICAL TAPESTRY, THE DEPARTURE OF THE PRODIGAL SON
LATE 17TH CENTURY in wool and silk, to the foreground a young man stands before a seated older bearded man, and gestures to a city in the distance, a staff in his hand, within a border with fruit, flowers, birds, and putti315cm x 240cmNote: The Parable of the Prodigal Son, one of the most important of the New Testament parables of Jesus, teaches the virtues of repentance and forgiveness and the dangers of vice and extravagance. The Prodigal Son is the third and final parable of a cycle on redemption, Luke 15: 11-32, following the parable of the Lost Sheep and the parable of the Lost Coin. The scene in the tapestry depicts the younger son standing before his father before his departure, while his older sibling works in the field in the middle distance. He gestures to a far-off city on hill, where intends to go, and where he inevitably squanders his inheritance with extravagant and wasteful living.
