PROVINCIAL EUROPEAN CARVED FIGURE OF THE VIRGIN Provincial European carved santos figure of the Virgin, with evidence of polychrome decoration, perhaps German or Austrian, possibly 17th century or later, and depicting the Mother of God at prayer. 17" H x 6.5" W x 3" D. Note: It is unclear whether this enigmatic carving is damaged and broken, or whether the figure was carved from a fragment whose distinctive break pattern inspired it to be carved into the folds of the drapery of the figure of the Virgin. The wood may have come from a religious building damaged by fire or demolished for other reasons.
