U.S. WWII Navy PT Boat PaintedU.S. WWII Navy PT Boat Painted Jacket PT-299 was laid down and launched in 1943 built by Higgins Industries in New Orleans. In October she was assigned to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 16 (PTRon 16) under the command of Lt. Commander Almer P. Colvin. She was involved in the Aleutian campaign from August 1943 to May 1944 when she was transferred to?the New Guinea-Philippines-Borneo region.?She received a Navy Commendation as part of PTRon 16 for action at Mindoro (PI) in December 1944. Also known as "Pom Pom" and "Lucky Lady " she was taken out of service in November 1945 and destroyed in the Philippines. The British (along with the French Italians and other European nations) began developing Patrol Torpedo Boats in early 1900s and used them in combat during the first World War. It was not until the late 1930s that the U.S. began to seriously develop?its own PT program. As with any other beginnings the early designs had shortcomings. The British design was too short to handle American torpedos and even the slightly longer boat was still to light for rough seas.Just before WWII ELCO was building most American PTs but Higgins and Huckins developed their own designs to compete with ELCO's model. The Navy held a "Plywood Derby" to evaluate the three designs head-to-head. They decided that ELCO had the slightly better design but all three had merit and all were awarded contracts. Higgins built 199 boats by the end of the war (to ELCO's 385 and Huckins' 18) producing one of the longer heavier boats.A rare piece as PT-299 was only active for two and a half years. Condition: Very good. Some crazing in paint.
