Presented on a stage in a tall booth covered with striped canvas, the puppeteer, known as the professor, has Punch, who remains on stage throughout the performance on his right hand. He works the rest of the characters with his left hand, bringing them on stage one at a time. Punch and Judy men were once familiar sights in large English cities, setting up their traveling stage on street corners, giving a half hour show, then moving on to the next neighborhood. Modern performers of Punch and Judy are traditionally seaside entertainers, found in British holiday resorts during the summer. Punch and Judy had started to appear in the American colonies during the late eighteenth century, this appears to be from the second/third quarter of the 19th century. A very cool primitive toy!
