Early British portrait, lady bearing resemblance to Anne prior to becoming Queen of England circa 1690s, unsigned, manner of Godfrey Kneller, 1646-1723, British, late 17th/early 18th century, 30-3/8 x 25-5/8 in.; 18th century carved and gilt wood oval frame. Restretched on 19th century stretcher, 19th century lining, two periods of restoration, retouch affecting areas of face, chest and background, heavy varnish obscuring some retouch but possibly up to 20 percent of surface; frame resurfaced, separations at joints, abrasions. CESARINE HENRIETTE FLORE DAVIN (FRANCE, 1773-1844) Portrait miniature of "Anna Boleyn", as identified on the kid leather backing, oil on ivory, signed lower right, in a delicate gilt bronze frame with integral easel, retaining the remnants of the original silk covered backing. 4 1/2" x 3" overall. The painting is fine.
Anne Boleyn was Queen of England from 1533 to 1536 as the second wife of King Henry VIII. She was the mother of the future Queen Elizabeth. She was accused of treason and beheaded by Henry to clear the way for his third wife, Jane Seymour (and the Reformation).
