QUEEN ANNE BURL WALNUT BUREAU BOOKCASE English Queen Anne burl walnut veneer bureau bookcase or secretary desk, circa 1750-1780, having a shaped cornice, double paneled doors opening to reveal a grooved interior with shelves and drawers, single candleslide, slant front lower case with fitted interior and tooled leather writing surface, three graduated drawers, and rising on bracket feet, apparently unmarked. English, 18th century, burl walnut. The swan's neck pediment over the conforming doors with beveled mirror panels and gilt metal molding opening to the interior with three fixed shelves and four short drawers; the fall front with four elaborate satinwood inlaid panels of birds and flowering vines, opening to the interior fitted with pigeonholes, drawers and a hidden compartment; the three long serpentine drawers with similar inlaid panels; all raised on bracket feet.
97 x 42 x 21 1/2 in. (246.4 x 106.7 x 54.6 cm.)
Condition:
Several shallow age cracks on top edge of the hinged slant-lid, with a larger age crack to the front right side of the case at the lower right corner of the hinged lid, another age crack to the bottom of the left side near the back, and small losses of veneer to the front edge of both left and right of the base flanking the long drawers. Hardware likely replaced.
