MALCOLM WRIGHT, GLOBULAR JAR WITH SCATTERED LEAVES DESIGNMALCOLM WRIGHT, GLOBULAR JAR WITH SCATTERED LEAVES DESIGN, globular form with a pale grey glaze, with rust highlights, painted with scattered leaves Cataogue note: Malcolm Wright was born in Minnesota and received his formal education in Vermont, where he has lived and worked for nearly 30 years. When he was introduced to Japanese pottery making, while teaching at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., his lifelong vocation as a potter began. Wright apprenticed with the family of Tarouemon Nakazato, a 12th generation potter who was named a Living National Treasure in Japan, where a keen awareness of focus and technique, combined with his own experimental curiosity and various artistic influences led Wright to develop a unique style. Wright and his wife, Marjorie, established Turnpike Road Pottery, Marlboro, Vermont in 1970. In the early 1970s he taught at Marlboro College and established the ceramics program there. Under his instruction she learned modern pottery techniques including wheel throwing and the potter's wheel. Cardew took her on an extensive tour of the United States in 1971-72. Fayette Street, Suite 5D, Syracuse, NY Catalogue note: Adelaide Alsop Robineau's interest in art began with china painting, a popular hobby among the women of leisure in mid-19th Century New England. She also dabbled in painting, taking lessons from William Merritt Chase, but by the turn of the 20th Century she was fully committed to ceramics. She and her husband, French ceramicist Samuel E. Robineau, launched the ceramics publication Keramic Studio and moved to Syracuse, New York, where they both continued to make pottery in a studio attached to their house. She taught ceramics at Syracuse University and continued to create and decorate her own pottery. She experimented widely with forms and with glazes, creating many innovative approaches to potting and decorating that would influence ceramicists for generations to come. Dimensions: 9 x 9 in.
