CARVED RAMSES II TOE FRAGMENT
CARVED RAMSES II TOE FRAGMENT Silver Mounted Pink Granite Toenail Fragment, purportedly from one of the colossal statues of Pharoah Ramses II (reigned ca. 1279-1213 BC) at the entrance to the Temple of Luxor (Luxor, Egypt); collected by photographer, author and adventurer Sigmund Krausz in 1899, who took possession of this piece because of a concern that it would otherwise be lost forever. Krausz brought the fragment to Europe and had it mounted in silver with the engraved notation: "Small toenail from colossal Statue of Ramses II. Temple of Luxor, Feb. 13th, 1899"; 2 1/2" high, 4 1/2" x 3 1/2"; Accompanied by a framed and notarized statement made in Chicago in 1919, from Krausz describing his acquisition of this piece, OS: 12" x 9".
Sigmund Krausz was made famous by his documentary photos released as "Street Types of Chicago" in 1892, the first publication of its kind. He also wrote "The Autocar Automobile Directory" and as record of his time overseas "Towards the Rising Sun, a Story of Travel & Adventure", published by Laird & Lee in Chicago, 1903. This recounted his travels parts to Greece and Asia Minor, Egypt and India.

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FIGURE OF OSIRIS
ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FIGURE OF OSIRIS
EGYPT, LATE PERIOD, 664 - 332 B.C. bronze, gold and lapis lazuli, standing deity in typical mummiform pose, holding a crook and flail in his crossed hands, wearing the atefcrown with frontal uraeus and incised plaited false beard, the face with inlaid quartz eyes and lapis brows, raised on a bespoke mount20.2cm tallPrivate family collection, Switzerland, since at least 1940, the piece is accompanied by a supporting letter confirming the provenance.Note:Osiris is most often represented as a shrouded mummy, emphasizing his connection with the dead. He holds a flail and a short shepherd’s crook, insignia associated with Egyptian kingship, and wears a long, braided beard, emblematic of divinity. On the front of his tall crown is a uraeus, a cobra ready to spit fire at his enemies. The horns may link him with the sun god, who often appears as a ram-headed man at the end of the day and during the night.By the first millennium B.C., statues and statuettes of Osiris were offered in profusion, reflecting both the importance of the god and a shift in how the ancient Egyptians performed certain rituals. Some of the places where statues of Osiris have been found can be identified as temples and shrines belonging to him, but they have also been found as offerings in contexts where explanations are not evident.

ACHAEMENID BRONZE FINIAL WITH
ACHAEMENID BRONZE FINIAL WITH RAMSAncient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 500 to 330 BCE. A lovely bronze finial of a ceremonial staff, comprised of 2 rams or goats propped up on a central column that rises between them. The column is fit with a conical base and flared top with a horizontal, zigzag motif along the side, as well as 2 bulbs along the shaft that are adorned with incised circles. Each of the ancient rams showcases a slender body as they stand tall on their stretched out hindlegs and fold their front legs along the column. Facing forward, they both present short, round snouts, incised mouths, bulging eyes, and thick, dramatically curved horns. This lovely example is reminiscent of both a Master of Animals design and the famous depiction of rearing goats eating from the Tree of Life. Size: 3.1" W x 4.6" H (7.9 cm x 11.7 cm); 4.9" H (12.4 cm) on included custom stand.
According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Goats, specifically wild mountain goats, were an important aspect of ancient Persian iconography. Unlike Mesopotamia, which is flat, Iran has many mountains, and mountain goats, with their distinctive curved horns, became important markers of Iranian identity, even before the region came to be known as 'Iran.'"
