Signature, date, and edition number at lower left beneath wing. An outstanding bronze sculpture of a lively raven by the late William Foster Reese. Reese has captured the large bird issuing a call through its open beak as it alights before a bivalve mollusk on the ground. Much of Reese's oeuvre was inspired by the cultures and natural world of the Northwest. Traditionally, the raven has been venerated as highly symbolic trickster creature that represents creation, knowledge, and the nuances of truth-telling by First Nations people in this part of the world. He also worked in other media - pastel, watercolor, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. His work was widely exhibited throughout the United States as well as abroad. In addition, Reese received many awards including: the Robert Lougheed Gold Medal from the National Western Heritage Museum, two silver medals from the National Parks Academy for the Arts, and the Best of Show Colonel Smith Award from the National Wildlife Art Museum.
