JOHN DOUGLAS PATRICK (1863-1937) EXHIBITED PAINTINGJohn Douglas Patrick (American, 1863-1937)Boy Making Apple Butter (1903)The 'oil on shingle' as it is described verso on a 1996 exhibition label from the Nelson-Atkins Museum is signed 'Patrick' lower right and dated 1903.The painterly composition exhibiting a wide range of pleasing colors provides an historical record of how apple butter was simmered over a wood fire in an outdoor kitchen where, in this case, a young man is afforded the relief of stirring the recipe from a distance, sitting next to apples and peelings.Board measures 6.25 x 15 with a framed size of 11.75 x 20.5 inches.Very good condition noting four scattered bits of paint loss extreme left edge and inpainting extreme upper left corner. TWO STERLING SILVER SERVING DISHES,
TWO STERLING SILVER SERVING DISHES, a 1928 Reed & Barton Sauceboat, lg. 7 3/4 , and a Dominick & Haff Bowl with square pleated rim, monogrammed, lg. 8 5/8 in., approx 12.85 troy oz. Provenance: Hailing from Wales and England, the Jones family were early settlers to Massachusetts circa 1660. Settling in the Berkshires, the family worked closely with Zenas Crane of Crane Paper, established in 1801. The paper firm still exists today and holds the recipe for the currency of the United States. At that time, all paperwork was done by hand; rags were pounded into pulp in mortar and twenty mortars were required to reduce 100 pounds of rags to pulp each day. In 1845, Edward Dorr Griffin Jones branched out and founded E.D. Jones Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Working closely with local machine shops, he developed and patented specialized machinery, notably the "No Wave" pulp machine for the manufacture of papermaking. A pioneer in the industry, E.D. Jones & Sons Company was sold for $5,000,000 to Beloit Iron Works in 1958. The silver being offered here has been handed down from generation to generation of the Jones family.

Harding and Thomas Harding, Christopher Robertson, and other early Nashville landowners, with witness signatures including William Harding and Giles Harding; Survey map of land along Harpeth River; several pages of accounts with John Nichol for household items including furnishings such as tea china and tumblers, fine beaver gloves, food and sundry supplies; a hand written recipe for Cold Beer; a $2,000 check from a New Orleans bank for Mr. George Harding; a scrap of paper with prices for architectural work including stairs, 1804 s.f. flooring, roof, windows, doors etc; and a 1863 Civil War Pass for Mrs. Harding's driver and Fanny Harding's oath of allegiance to the United States Government. 19TH C. MOROCCAN BERBER GLAZED
19TH C. MOROCCAN BERBER GLAZED BOWL, EX-MUSEUMNorth Africa, Morocco, Tamegroute (Tamgrout), Berber culture, ca. 19th century CE. This is a beautiful wheel-thrown pottery bowl that is glazed the characteristic green and yellow-brown shade that the village of Tamegroute is renowned for. The bowl rests on a pedestal foot, the broad shoulders rise upward to a thick rim that is scalloped with pointed nodules. The interior basin, exterior rim, and midsection are all coated with glazing, white the base and foot reveal the brown stoneware surface. When fired, the pottery pieces are stacked inside each other - the pitting and scars throughout occur during the firing and when the pieces are taken out of the oven. The green results from the copper and magnesium in the clay and glaze, a special recipe that has been used by Berber artisans for generations and has yet to be perfectly replicated outside of Tamegroute. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 3.35" H (16.5 cm x 8.5 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
