An Anglo-Colonial Carved Hardwood
An Anglo-Colonial Carved Hardwood Reclining Chair mid-19th c. related to the designs of Lockwood de Forest (American 1850-1932) and William Morris (English 1834-1896) rectangular adjustable back shaped arms square uprights floral blocks serpent entwined legs height 41 in. width 29 in. depth 41 in. Note: The chair presented here shares its form with chairs designed by William Morris. The carvings appear to be closely related to those found in pieces attributed to Lockwood de Forest. De Forest was with Associated Artists in 1879 prior to being in India where he opened the Ahmedabad Wood Carving Company which supplied Associated Artists until their close in 1882. De Forest then returned to New York to open his own design firm.
