- "FIGHTING RED CLOUD'S WARRIORS" 1ST
"FIGHTING RED CLOUD'S WARRIORS" 1ST EDITION 1926Presented in this lot is the First Edition of "Fighting Red Cloud's Warriors" by E. A. Brininstool, 1926, The Hunter-Trader-Trapper Co., Columbus, Ohio. A classic account of The Fetterman Massacre, The Wagon Box Fight, The Battle of Beecher Island, and The Buffalo Wallow Fight. From the Preface, "I am not a believer in the old adage that 'the only good Indian is a dead Indian.' My sympathy is with the red man. The early white traders who trafficked with the Indian were, as a rule, a class of men of little conscience and few scruples, who would stoop to any deceit or trickery to rob the Indian of his furs and pelts. It was the early trader who introduced whiskey among the Indian tribes; who, through fraud and knavery, turned the red man against the whites of whatever class. This was the beginning of the hatred and contempt which made all white men, good or bad, soon look alike to the warring savage." Brininstool (1870-1957) was a cowboy poet, but was not a working cowboy. He lived most his life in Los Angeles, rubbed elbows with Will Rogers and Charles Russell, who met regularly as part of a western artists group at the University Club in LA. He is best known for Trail Dust of a Maverick (1914) and Bozeman Trail (1922). Brininstool was a prolific author on the subject of Indian Wars, especially on Little Big Horn. This red cloth illustrated hardcover is in good overall condition, slight scuffing and soiling observed on cover and edges. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and very slight foxing, no other obvious marring noted. Measures 5.25"W x 7.25"L , weight approximate 10oz.

- CLOISONNé ENAMEL MASCOT CANE-Ca. 1890
CLOISONNé ENAMEL MASCOT CANE-Ca. 1890 -Shippo enamel handle with a large, round and flat top and an integral long and cylindrical stem decorated with a yellow dragon on a black background with endless, partly colored clouds. The fabled animal shows a cartooned head with round eyes, large open mouth and long whiskers and erected hair and horns on the top of the flaring knob to extend on the opposite side and down on the stem with a stretched and scaled body with two paws and tufted tail. -Executed in the ancient and traditional Far-Eastern love for the detail perfection, the striking handle comes on a linear tapering ebony shaft with a hardly noticeable, wrapping around treaded pattern and a metal ferrule. -Decorative and agreeably light weighted, this lucky charm cane is of the highest grade of its kind, and, despite a great fragility, survived in flawless condition. -H. 5 ¾” x 2”, O.L. 40 ½” -$800-$1,200 -Cloisonné is a way of enameling an object, (typically made of copper) whereby fine wires are used to delineate the decorative areas (cloisons in French, hence cloisonné) into which enamel paste is applied before the object is fired and polished. -The Japanese characters used for the word shippo (the Japanese term for enamelware) mean “Seven Treasures” which is a reference to the seven treasures mentioned in Buddhist texts. Although these treasures may vary, they generally included at least some of the following: gold, silver, emerald, coral, agate, lapis lazuli, giant clamshell, glass and pearl. The Japanese applied this expression to the rich colors found on Chinese enamel wares and later to those they made themselves. -Dragons combine the characteristics of the four elements, earth, air, fire and water; they symbolize light and dark, the sun and moon, masculine and feminine, and the unity underlying these opposing forces. The dragon possesses the wings of a bird and the scales of a snake or fish. It breathes fire and often guards a hoard of treasure in its lair. In the East and in pre-Christian Europe the dragon was seen as helpful and kind - indeed, the red dragon is the emblem of Wales - but Christianity, which saw the serpent as a symbol of evil, also viewed the dragon as a creature of ill-omen, representing destructiveness and inner chaos. The Chinese Dragon is a symbol of the Emperor, of male energy and of fertility; it is a benign animal and the fifth creature of the Chinese zodiac. It guards the East and represents sunrise, spring, and the rains. Indeed, torrential rain is known as dragon rain. There are four types of dragons in Chinese legend: Dragons of the air, the earth, the water and the spirit.
- SIGNED LEONARD BASKIN MONOTYPE - "GERONIMO"
SIGNED LEONARD BASKIN MONOTYPE - "GERONIMO" (1992)Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000). "Geronimo" monotype, 1992. Artist's signature, "monotype touched" and title handwritten in pencil beneath image. An impressive hand-colored monotype by legendary artist Leonard Baskin depicting a bust-length portrait of the famous Geronimo - a respected leader, medicine man, and shaman of the Apache people. Leonard Baskin created two series of lithographs that depict 19th century Native Americans, including illustrious individuals such as Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, and Geronimo. His poignant portraits convey these sitters' noble qualities as well as the despair and loss experienced by these people. This project began when Leonard Baskin was asked to illustrate a handbook for Custer National Park (now called Little Big-Horn National Park). Since Baskin actually detested Custer, he instead opted to create portraits of Native American chiefs and leaders that conveyed their bravery and intelligence like this example. Size of sight view: 23.875" L x 17.875" W (60.6 cm x 45.4 cm) Size of frame: 31.5" L x 25.5" W (80 cm x 64.8 cm)
Leonard Baskin was a creative force for more than 5 decades and worked in a variety of media; however, he is best known for sizeable works on paper like this example. "Geronimo" is rendered in Baskin's characteristically expressive manner and grand scale. It is among Baskin's figurative prints that rivaled the works of Abstract Expressionists during his day, set in a custom frame and hand signed.
Baskin was a 20th century "Renaissance Man" - a highly respected sculptor, printmaker, writer, and watercolorist. His prints included mythological, classical, and biblical scenes as well as portraits and floral studies. Baskin studied at Yale University from 1941 to 1943 and received his B.A. at the New School for Social Research in 1949. He also founded Gehenna Press which specialized in fine book production and taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts as well as Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts from 1953 until 1974. Baskin's artworks are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Vatican Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, the Tate Gallery in London, and other elite institutions. "Angel of Death" has been collected by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art among others (accession numbers 1971.300, 1971.25, and 1961-157-4 respectively). His noted public sculptural commissions include pieces for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial as well as the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Baskin also received many prestigious honors, such as a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Jewish Cultural Achievement Award. He was also honored with numerous retrospective exhibitions at institutions including the Smithsonian Museum, the Albertina Museum, and the Library of Congress.

Hauser 92 Catalogue note: John Hauser is notable for the close relationships he maintained with the Indigenous people who were the subjects of his paintings. Born in Cleveland to German immigrants, Hauser studied painting at the Royal Academy in Munich before returning to Ohio and discovering his deep love for the American West. Starting in 1891, Hauser traveled extensively through Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, New Mexico and South Dakota, painting hundreds of portraits of Native Americans. He had a deep fascination and respect for the various cultures he encountered, and scholars at the National Museum of the American Indian have commended his work for its accuracy. In 1901, Hauser and his wife were adopted by the Sioux tribe, and Hauser was given an honorary name that translates to "Straight White Shield." The subject of this portrait is Saluso of the Kiowa tribe, indigenous to the Great Plains of the United States. According to historian Charles M. Robinson III, Saluso (also spelled Tsau Lau Te, meaning "Gray Goose" or "Cry of the Wild Goose") was the favorite son of Satana (circa 1820-1878), the famous Kiowa war chief. In Hauser's portrait, Saluso wears a hair pipe (elongated bead) breastplate, indicating his wealth and high status.
