Mrs. Viola Hordern inscription verso painted by Frank C King for Speaight Ltd 157 New Bond St London.Viola died 14 February 1929 from pneumonia in the UK. Wife of Mr. Anthony Hordern, of Sydney. She was, before her marriage, Miss Violet Sydney Bingham.Mrs. Hordern was the wife of Mr. Anthony Hordern, who is a brother of Sir Samuel Hordern. She was formerly Miss Viola Bingham, a daughter of the late Colonel Bingham, of Melbourne, and at one time of the Indian Army. She leaves three children, one son and two daughters, who are in London with their father. She was for a time interested in racing, and entered horses at Randwick, and was particularly successful at the picnic races. She was also a prominent exhibitor of cattle at the Royal Sydney Show. Mrs. Hordern, whose home was "Retford Hall," Darling Point, was very handsome, and was very popular in society. With Mr. Hordern, she frequently lent "Retford Hall" for entertainments for various charities, and was a keen supporter of the Women's Hospital, Crown-street. A personal friend of the Hon. Mrs. Pitt Rivers, she was frequently at Admiralty House when Lord Forster was Governor-General of Australia, approx 67cm x 49cm. Provenance: Directly from the Hordern Family

My grandfather 'Pappy' Wise had a cotton farm a few miles, 5 or 6, out of Waxahachie, Texas and one night when I was about 7 or 8 years old a great light appeared in the sky. It was so great that speculation about the end of the world was bruited about among the grown folks at the farm. As it turns out a straw stack had caught fire on an adjoining farm and some small tool sheds and part of a fence was burned. We all visited the place next morning and heard tell of how the farmer and his sons had got the scared horses of the the barn. Such things are immensely impressive to young uns.'Image size 8.5 x 13.25, sheet measures 12 x 16, the frame is 19 x 23.25 inches.Good condition, the full untrimmed sheet, not laid down, no damage, puncture or repair, there is toning from a previous mat around the image and along the top edge of the print as shown in the images here outside the frame.

Note: Starting at the age of six, Ceylon artist Senaka Senanayake was considered a prodigy. He completed large paintings each day after school and by the end of the year, over a hundred paintings were ready so Senaka?s parents invited L.P Goonatilleke, a well known journalist and art critic to evaluate his work. He was so impressed that he immediately persuaded the Ceylon Society of Arts, the oldest art institution in Sri Lanka to organize a solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery. In March of 1959, the 8-year old painter had his first solo exhibition.The artist was eleven when he painted Red Horses. To date, he has held over a hundred one-man exhibitions in over 18 countries and on five continents.

The couple’s art collection ranges in style and period and spans a broad price-point.
