Beal studied naval architecture at Cornell University before studying with William Merritt Chase in the years following his graduation. Beal was a part of the American Watercolor Society, the Society of American Engravers, the Salmagundi Club, National Arts Club, and was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design in 1909.

Note: Robert Brady (1928-1986) who is listed as the "lender" on several of the backing labels on this lot had a career in the fine arts at the Art Institute of Chicago the Tyler Arts Center of Temple University and the Barnes Foundation before establishing residence in Cuernavaca Mexico in 1962. The Robert Brady Museum in Cuernavaca houses some 1 300 works amassed by Brady during his lifetime including those by Rufino Tamayo Frida Kahlo Miguel Covarrubias Marsden Hartley Graham Sutherland and Maurice Prendergast. The Smithsonian Institution Research Information System (SIRIS) lists the above lot "Blue Landscape'' Control Number IAP 84540014 as being owned by Robert Brady and as being illustrated in Green Eleanor "Maurice Prendergast: art of impulse and color " College Park MD: University of Maryland Gallery c. 1976 #61.
