Wikipedia: John H. Gaffney (1855-1913), nicknamed the "King of Umpires" and "Honest John" was an American umpire and manager in Major League Baseball. He was baseball's first great umpire, and played a pioneering role in the use of multiple umpires in baseball games.

The watchman was the precursor of the policeman. He patrolled the streets of the city at night carrying a lantern and staff, calling the state of the weather and the hour. The watchman was replaced by the 'peeler', the forerunner of the modern policeman in 1829. #police #watchman
