Well carved from bamboo root, which is traditionally the most difficult carving medium of 18th and 19th century China. This root carving is redesigned to be reminiscent of those made from rhinoceros horn. The dog must be turned upside down to reveal the drinking hollow, which in this case has been lined with silvered tin. With silk box.
