The Wallace Estate: Lee Renfrew Wallace and her husband Mahlon Brookings Wallace III lived an extremely happy and luxurious life filled with world travels, safaris, collecting, and philanthropy. From backgrounds in race-horse breeding and championship cattle ranching, the socialite couple paid homage to the St. Louis area community in a variety of ways. Mr. Wallace served as Director of Commerce Bank, President of the St. Louis Zoo Friends Board, and was charitable to numerous organizations he believed in. Behind every great man is a better woman, and his wife Lee was renowned for being the glue of the family while she warmly served as Director of Development for local educational institutions and made an impact with her lasting spirit. The couple’s art collection ranges in style and period and spans a broad price-point.

  ROBERT LAWRENCE (1933-2003) SOUTH AFRICANA large and extremely animated, limited edition bronze group titled 'GAME RANGER', by South African sculptor Robert Lawrence (1933-1003). Depicting the real life documented account of a lion attack on one of Kruger Parks' first game rangers- Harry Wolhuter, who was attacked by 2 lions while patrolling on horseback in 1904. Titled, signed and numbered 1/20, dated 1999. Dimensions, 16" high x 28" wide. Note from the consignor's archives: Robert Lawrence's father's Godfather, a well revered turn of the century ranger (in South Africa) named Harry Wholuter, was attacked on his horse by 2 massive male lions. He survived by killing one of them with his bare hands and small hunting knife, while the other lion focused on his horse. Lawrence's work is dynamic and excellent, all about early South Africa, wild game and pioneer struggle. This piece was purchased from the artist.

  WILLIAM LONEY LION PAINTINGA double-sided oil on board painting by William Glenworth Loney (1877-1956) having a large folky standing lion on one side and a winter lake scene on the other. The lion with his wild mane fills the frame while a rose bush and daisies dominate the foreground; the winter scene shows a tree lined snowy shore and a stag being chased by a wolf over the ice. Ex Leask collection. In its original simple pine frame this painting was featured in an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario (printed label: "William Loney, Picton, No 7"). Loney was a blacksmith in Prince Edward County, Ontario, who also carved and painted in his spare time. 1940-50. H: 14"; W: 19.25". Field Collection.
