U.S. Custom House Richmond VA Photograph taken after the Evacuation Fire of 1865 Unmounted albumen photograph 8 x 10 in. Attributed to Brady ca April 1865 though A.J. Russell made similar photographs around the same time. Erected in 1858 to serve as the United States Custom House Post Office and Courthouse in Richmond the building briefly held the offices of Confederate President Jefferson Davis in 1861 and was the site of his indictment for treason in 1866. It was one of the only buildings in downtown Richmond to survive the Evacuation Fire in the final days of the Civil War and exists today as part of the Lewis F. Powell Jr. United States Courthouse. The Ed Steers Lincolniana & Civil War Collection Condition: Very good condition. Lower right corner creased and paper remnants from previous mounting on verso.
