Biography (Courtesy of Donald Beagle, Belmont Abbey College Library & NC History Project): Ralph Ray Jr., a portrait and landscape artist and nationally known illustrator of books and magazines, was born in Gastonia, North Carolina in 1920 and graduated from Belmont Abbey College near Charlotte in 1939. Ray studied at the Ringling Art School in Sarasota, Florida and at the Grand Central Art School in New York. He is best remembered for his watercolor paintings of birds. In New York, Ray began illustrating children's books and published The Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock Ways (Oxford University Press, 1946), and Philips Electronics and the Insurance Institute of America hired Ray to illustrate their national advertising campaigns.

Wide stained wood frame. Signed upper right and dated 1950. 29-3/4" x 21-3/4" sight, 37" x 29-1/4" framed. Biography: Nashville-born illustration artist and painter Thomas B. Allen studied at Vanderbilt University and the Art Institute of Chicago. His illustration work appeared in numerous publications including Life, McCalls, and The New Yorker. In 1959 he illustrated a story for Esquire Magazine about bluegrass singers Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, which led to a close and longtime collaboration, including seventeen country music album covers. Allen earned a New York Art Directors Club Gold Medal and a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators. He taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at the Parsons School of Design, Syracuse University, and the Ringling School of Art and Design. A retrospective of his work, organized by the recording artist Marty Stuart, was held from 2000-2002 at the Grand Ole Opry.

His interest in realism flourished while studying under Walter Steumpfig at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; he also studied at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida and was Artist in Residence at the Fort Worth Center of Art in Texas from 1958-1961. Chumley moved with his family to the Shenandoah Valley in 1961. Scenes from his native East Tennessee were a frequent source of inspiration. He had one man shows at the Dulin Gallery of Art (predecessor of the Knoxville Museum of Art, Fort Worth, Norfolk, Va., Pennsylvania and New York. His New York exhibits were very successful and earned him national recognition and comparisons with Hopper and Wyeth. He is buried in Winchester, Virginia. Hand-painted heavy wooden circus trunk with iron fixtures, being the personal luggage of Roland Butler, a longtime circus man who completed work as both a press agent and advertising artist. He eventually became director of publicity of the Ringling show. 34 x 20 _ x 12". Together with a framed collection of Christmas greetings (ca. 1920s) for the Clyde Beatty and Cole circus all with artwork by Butler (framed 33 x 12 _") and a collection of his business letterhead from various circuses (ca. 1910s Ð 30s) trimmed and mounted, some heavily foxed and faded (framed 9 _ x 27 _").

Very good. The artist worked for the Strobridge Lithographing Co. of Cincinnati before moving to Chicago. He is well-known for his Native American paintings and for his posters for the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.
