UNION SOLDIER'S LETTER TO PENNSYLVANIA DESCRIBING CAPTURE OF ROANOKE ISLAND Being an Autograph Letter Signed "R Martin", Roanoke Island, NC, 2 pp., 8vo, to John H. Trites, Montgomery, PA, reading, in part: "...the long expected Battle has come of at last... it was a pretty sharp one...we were near enough to hear the music of the Rebel Pills which made us bob our heads down without orders, we passed right in front of their Battery and the balls flew over us quite brisk...we were ordered to flank so we marched around through a swamp above our knees and thick with bushes and briars which I believe was harder work than fighting but not quite so dangerous...the Rebels were driven of(f) before we got around so we had not the satisfaction of being actively engaged...we done as we were ordered and we done it cherefully. I cannot how prisoners there is but they look hard having no uniform the greater part of them have Kentucky Jean clothes...." Included is the letter's original patriotic postal cover featuring an embossed effigy of General George McClellan and addressed to Mr. John H. Trites, King of Prussia P.O., Montgomery County, PA.

A RARE NORTH CAROLINA INLAID WALNUT CELLARETTERoanoke River Basin, North Carolina, 1790-1810, possibly shop of Micajah Wilkes, with highly figured single board walnut top with astragal line inlay, opening to fitted interior, conforming stand fitted with single dovetailed drawer, on square legs with stretchers, back fitted with original locking toggle, brass drawer pull and carrying handles, retains three period blown glass gin bottles, one with period inscription "g/IW" or "9/IW", 33-3/4 x 20-1/4 x 15 in.
Provenance: William A. Coffield of Edenton, North Carolina; to Johnston Pettigrew Coffield, born 1865; to Roberta ?Toots? Coffield Shackleton of Norfolk, Virginia; by gift to the consignor?s mother, circa 1980s
Condition:
good condition and integrity overall, bed molding replaced, brasses replaced, case bottom reattached and with one small replaced section, bottle dividers replaced, typical shrinkage at top with some checking and very minor warping, lid with one section of beading replaced, other scattered minor flaws, formerly fitted with casters, now removed

Colonial frontiersman and soldier who fought for the British in the French & Indian Wars and the American Revolution; founder and commander of Rogers' Rangers a highly effective militia in the French & Indian Wars which produced several important leaders in the Continental Army who fought against their former commander. ANS 1p on laid paper 8.25 x 6.5 in. August 20 1778 at Middleton addressed to William Arnold Inn Holder of Greenwich (RI) asking him to retrieve clothing and wafers from a box stored in the inn's cave and to forward the items to Mr. Gideon Mumford who will deliver them. Condition: Scattered stains and soiling with minor holes along the folds.
