Auction buying is wholesale and not the same as retail store or retail internet buying. There are no returns based on condition. Our auction items are mostly vintage, mostly from estates, and are not in perfect condition. The items are sold "as is", and we are acting as agents, not as principals. Accordingly, prospective buyers are entirely responsible for determining the physical condition of lots prior to and as a condition to bidding. Bidders are obligated to determine their level of interest in and value of the items based solely on their own review. To assist prospective bidders in this endeavor, we offer in person open-house preview days prior to the auction, and also provide written condition reports in response to emailed requests submitted to condition@woodburyauction.com at least two days prior to the auction. The printed catalog lot information is a best efforts presentation of our opinion, rendered on a time-sensitive schedule, and is provided for guidance only, without legal obligation, and does not constitute a "statement of fact". The absence of condition statements in a lot catalog entry does not mean that the item is in perfect condition or is without defects. Please understand that our duty is to present the items fairly for bidder consideration and that the bidder's duty is to make independent investigation of the condition of items before bidding.

SCOTT BURNS, ILLINOIS (20TH / 21ST CENTURY), DESIGN #78, LITHOGRAPH, 2005, 10" X 13 3/4", 16" X 20" (FRAME)Scott Burns, Illinois, (20th / 21st Century) Design #78, lithograph, 2005 signed on mat lower right, numbered lower center, titled lower left. From the artist's DesignsByAlgorithm.com website: Background: I'm a retired engineering professor ("emeritus" status) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This artwork is an outgrowth of research I did in applying computer graphics to visualize the behavior of iterative numerical methods in engineering design. I exhibited this artwork at art fairs throughout central U.S. from 1990 to 2015. I still teach a few classes each year at U of I and conduct research on various topics of interest, most recently colorimetry. I recently returned to school for a few years as a non-degree undergraduate student in Fine and Applied Arts at U of I studying ceramics, and also assisted a fellow prof, Stephen Cartwright, with his artistic efforts. My technical interests include mechanism design, electronics, programming, microcontroller-based systems, mathematics of human color perception, and image processing. My artistic interests include ceramics, photography, sculpture, kinetic art, and of course, the work you see here! I've been on a "documentation" binge lately, trying to document past projects here. To understand the process, think of the image as comprising a large number of tiny pixels. The goal is to color each pixel according to the outcome of a single, simple iterative process. The x-y coordinates of each pixel provide the starting point for the iterative process. This starting value (expressed as a coordinate pair, or as a single complex number) is entered into a mathematical expression, which generates a new value. The value obtained from the expression is entered back into the same expression, producing yet another value. This process repeats until the value satisfies some mathematical condition defined by the artist (called an orbit trap), at which point the iteration terminates. The pixel is then colored according to a color lookup table, with the aid of a transfer function that selects a color according to some characteristic of the outcome of the iteration. At this point, one pixel has been colored. The same expression is used for each and every pixel of the image, differing only in the starting value used to initiate the process. This is then repeated sixty million times, once for each of the remaining pixels, to produce the completed image. There is no manipulation of the image once it has been created by the computer program–no hand coloring or drawing. Control of the technique is achieved through the artist's selection and manipulation of the mathematical equation, the orbit traps, and the color mapping that relates terminating events to pixel colors. The artist's manipulations of the code tend to be global in nature, as compared to the local manipulations one achieves with a paintbrush. lithograph, 2005 Dimensions: 10" x 13 3/4", 16" x 20" (frame)
