(CHICAGO RAILROAD) ROCK ISLAND
(CHICAGO RAILROAD) ROCK ISLAND SYSTEM A reverse glass and mother-of-pearl inlaid sign created for the Rock Island System Railroad Detroit Photographic Co. 1900 featuring a train with cows and a cowboy on horseback against a town along the foothills of Pikes Peak which is shown in the background eglomise border with gilt title Rock Island System each car with different name on the side. In the late 1800s Andrea T. Gavell a veteran train car maker for the Rock Island Railroad System developed a technique for working on the glass faces of a number of clocks which were later put into executive offices. Due to the rising demand for mother-of-pearl inlays the company obtained bids on a commercial basis to produce 50 signs over a period of two years for $50.00 each. The signs were painted by hand using a black and white photo taken by the Detroit Photographic Co. and copyrighted in 1900. The present sign which once adorned the walls of company stations is one of only a few known to exist today. 78 x 17 inches.

RICHARD FLORSHEIM, ILLINOIS (1916 - 1979), ARIAL VIEW NIGHTTIME CITYSCAPE, LITHOGRAPH, 13 7/8"H X 17 7/8"W (PLATE)Richard Florsheim, Illinois, (1916 - 1979) arial view nighttime cityscape, lithograph Artist proof lower left, titled lower middle, signed lower right. Biography from the Archives of askART: The following was compiled and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher of Laguna Woods, California:Richard Florsheim was born on October 25, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois. He was a painfully shy child, channelling all his energies into straight-A scholarship and crude, gloomy art. His father reluctantly helped him get an art education in Europe during the 1930s, but before World War II Florsheim managed to sell just one picture In the Navy during the war, Florsheim discovered in himself an unexpected streak of scientific acumen. He developed a radar plane-spotting technique that is still considered basic. But at the end of the war, he was still faced with many problems in his art. He buckled down to the backbreaking work schedule and exhibited only on occasion. Happily married and with an art teaching job to help make ends meet, he still felt and painted misery. But gradually the gloom lifted from his work and he began to sell until there came a time when everything he painted was snapped up. He died in 1979. Sources include: Mantle Fielding's Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, 1986-7 Time Magazine, November 23, 1959. lithograph Dimensions: 13 7/8"H x 17 7/8"W (plate)
