ROMAN MARBLE FRAGMENTARY RELIEF
ROMAN MARBLE FRAGMENTARY RELIEF CARVING OF A HORSE HEAD5 1/23 x 6 3/4 x 3 1/4 in.
Illustrated in Rolf Winkes, Love for Antiquity, Selections from the Joukowsky Collection , Brown University, 1985, pg. 104 cat. #78, and dated 2nd century A.D.
Catalog note: "The spirited look of the flaring nostril and open mouth together with the short brush-like mane and forelock place this piece in a tradition evocative of 5th century B.C. Athens. Fine examples of this type include Selene's horse on the east pediment of the Parthenon and the rearing horse on the Attic funerary relief from the Villa Albani. This Roman version, probably from a sarcophagus, may reflect the philhellenism of Hadrian's reign".
