STEUBEN FLORENTIA GLASS CENTERPIECE
STEUBEN FLORENTIA GLASS CENTERPIECE BOWLDESCRIPTION: Steuben Florentia glass centerpiece bowl with pink cinnamon coloring and flower motif.

Marked: F-d-l in polished area.

Shape 6784
Pictured at p. 108 of Objects of Desire, The Art of Frederick Carder by Alan Shovers.
An example of a cinnamon colored Florentia bowl is shown as #54 in Steuben Glass: The Carder Years, by the Museum of Fine Arts of St. Petersburg, Florida, for an exhibit shown from September 30 through November 11, 1984.
Technically, Florentia is related to Cintra and Cluthra, as it is made of glass particles cased between layers of glass. Five petaled flora form design on a frosted background, and has bits of silver mica floating throughout.
Pictured, Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass by Dimitroff, p. 124, fig. 5.30
Pictured in Frederick Carder-Portrait of a Glassmaker by Corning Museum, p. 91
Frederick Carder and His Steuben Glass by Rockwell Gallery. “Another of the rarer varieties of glass made by Carder” p. 26
Pictured in The Collector’s Encyclopedia of American Art Glass by Shuman, p. 153. At page 21 “Florentia is exceedingly rare and a unique type of Carder glass found mainly in major museums. On occasion, an example is offered for sale. Manufactured either in the late ‘20s or ‘30s, there was created within the acid white crystal a soft appearing leaf form. This five-petaled leaf, in green (Jade) or rose (Rosaline), is delicately veined; the points project upwards from the bases of hollow examples, like vases and goblets. On a deep bowl viewed from above, they radiate outward in a circle. Flecks of mica throughout the glass give the added illusion of shimmering morning dew. Existing examples display both the Fleur-de-Lis signature and air traps, ranging from a common nail head to the size of a dime.”
Pictured in, A Guide to Steuben Glass, Vol. II, by Ericson, p. 58. “To say that Florentia is rare is indeed quite correct.” “This particular glass type is in our opinion the most romantic, intriguing and fetching creation of all the Carder innovations for Steuben.” “There can be absolutely no doubt that Carder’s Florentia is an intarsia-type creation, and preceded it by a very short period of time.”
The Glass of Frederick Carder by Gardner, p. 73. “In this decorative technique, the leaf-shaped elements were prepared from powdered glass in the shape and color desired, usually green or pink.” “After annealing, the entire surface was given a mat finish by acid etching or sandblasting.”
