JAMES ABBOTT MCNEILL WHISTLER (MA/UK/FRANCE, 1834-1903) "La Robe Rouge" (The Red Robe), portraying Whistler's sister-in-law, Ethel 'Bunnie' Philips, lithograph on paper, butterfly monogram in print on center left, blind stamped lower left by The Studio Magazine, London, which published this plate in 1894, during Whistler's lifetime. After Whistler's death his executor had the stones erased after a limited, final edition was pulled. In gilt ribbed frame, glazed under a two-toned green mat, OS: 16" x 14 1/2", SS: 8 3/4" x 7", toned, light stain at bottom.

Richard Whittington (1358 - 1423), in actual fact, made his fortune as a textile dealer. He entered London politics as a councilman and rose to become the Lord Mayor of London in 1937, an office he held three times. This jug was commissioned by The Guild of Specialist China and Class Retailers and issued in 1989 in a special edition of 5,000 pieces.
