TANAKA RYOHEI SIGNED ENGRAVINGTanakaTANAKA RYOHEI SIGNED ENGRAVINGTanaka has a special fondness for rural scenes and particularly the thatched roof farmhouses, as seen in this work, that are fast disappearing from the Japanese countryside; signed and dated to bottom right corner "T. Ryohei '72" and numbered "71/100" to bottom left; biography and art info verso; measures approximately 25-3/4" x 22-1/4" with frame and has a sight image of approximately 16-1/4" x 12-3/4"; in Very Good condition.
Tanaka Ryohei, born 1933 in Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture, is internationally known for his exceedingly fine etchings. He creates rich surfaces that juxtapose various subtle yet distinct textures. Leaves, thatch, wood, tile, stone, snow, and water come together to create astonishingly tactile and sensual images. Tanaka’s aesthetic sensibility is an equally important element in his work. He playfully uses visual dissonance to generate renewed interest, causing viewers to reappraise what originally seems to be exquisitely rendered but quotidian imagery.

His father was a farmer and his mother a marchande. Orphaned at age 16, he left for Port-Au-Prince two years later. He learned cabinet-making and was the maintenance man for the Evangelist Mission. His brother Charles, was a painter, but Audes says he was not influenced by him. He is proud of the fact that he has never been to an art school nor a museum, nor has he ever studied an art book. "My intelligence is my patron", he says. He began to paint in 1970, beginning with rural scenes. In 1974 he began to paint dogs, a species that he loves. He paints them with great humor, engaged in acts usually reserved for humans. His paintings contain large doses of positivity rendered with a highly sophisticated technique. (CPA)
