A 19C. BLACK AMERICAN CARVED PAINTEDA 19C. BLACK AMERICAN CARVED PAINTED FOLK ART FIGUREThe figure with exceptionally well carved detail, particularly in the execution of the hands, is dressed in gauzy print shirt and striped pants circa late 19th century. The shirt is tacked to the wood body with three rusty 'buttons' just above the green felt belt which has an interesting buckle formed by hand from pewter-colored metal. A tack into the wood body holds the belt back side. The shoes are green felt bent around the foot and held by tacks. The hat, which also appears to be period, is made from paper and painted grey.Measures 14.25 inches tall.Very good original condition, there are no issues of damage or repair.Provenance: Private Collection Denver, Colorado.

Approximately .56 caliber smooth bore in rusty condition. 61” overall length. Top of the barrel has remnants of some fine script that can’t be read. Sights appear to be original. Lock is marked “A GOMPF”. Both the barrel and lock show a dark brown patina with a 100% coverage of heavy rust and pitting. The full length curly maple stock is in poor condition with moderate wear. The stock was broken at the wrist and repaired. There is some missing wood on both sides toward the muzzle and also at the lock. Brass mountings. Lock does not work properly.

Approximately .63 caliber smooth bore that is in rusty condition. 57” overall length. Top of barrel is marked “J P Beck” in script. Sights appear to be original. Lock is unmarked. Both the barrel and lock show a dark brown patina with about 50% coverage of medium rust and pitting. The full length, raised relief carved curly maple stock is in good condition showing normal wear. There is heavier wear at the mid-point where the stock is actually worn through to the ramrod channel. Brass mountings. The brass patchbox shows a small amount of fine engraving on the mounting but not on the lid. The brass butt plate has some fine engraving on the heel. Mechanically, the lock functions, the trigger does not. In as found condition. Overall, a good rifle by one of 18th century America’s finest gunmakers. J.P. Beck was born in 1752 and died in Lebanon Township, Dauphin County, PA in 1811.
