J.N. Choate Before & After Photographs of Thomas Torlino Navajo Lot of 2 albumen boudoir photographs taken by J.N. Choate at the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania with Choate's imprint on each mount's recto. With penciled identification on verso: Thomas Torlino Navajoe [sic].Upon arrival at the school the boys had their long haircuts and their clothing exchanged for Anglo style pants and jackets. Tom's before portrait in which he wears traditional Navajo clothing and his after portrait in which he wears a three-piece suit and a watch chain became an iconic example used by government officials to illustrate their hope for progress in educating and civilizing the Indians. Condition: Some remnants of adhesive on before portrait; even toning to prints.

J.N. Choate Cabinet Cards of Spotted Tail & Other Sioux at the Carlisle School Lot of 2 cabinet photographs each with J.N. Choate's Carlisle PA backmark the first a studio portrait of Spotted Tail & Iron Wing as identified on mount below image; and a group portrait of the No. 3 Sioux Rosebud Agcy / Black Crow/ Two Strike / White Thunder / Spotted Tail / Iron Wing and two white male interpreters named Charles Tackrr(?) and Louis Rubado(?) as identified on verso.John N. Choate began a long photographic career at Carlisle Pennsylvania in 1879 when the famous Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded. The Brule Lakota Head Chief Spotted Tail was a progressive leader who understood the potential benefits that an English education might have for the young people of his tribe. He was among the first Indian leaders to make the courageous decision to send his own children to the eastern United States to be educated for the new life they would have to face. Four of his sons headed the group which included nephews and grandchildren of Spotted Tail as well as the children of other Brule chiefs. Condition: Some light even toning to photographs.

Private Jonathan E. Chase 2nd VT. & 1st U.S.S.S. CDV ID Disc & Badge Lot consists of uniformed cdv portrait vignette with faded pencil identification and E.E. Austin Bethel Vt. backmark with Chase's early WAR OF 1861 brass quarter size ID disc sutler stamped on verso J. E. Chase/Co. H./2nd/REG. /VT.VOL./JAY. And Chase's post-war ladder badge unit marked with CO. H./2/Vermont over CO. F./1/U.S.S.S. in six panels terminating in a bullion tassel.Jonathan E. Chase (1839-1908) originally enlisted from Jay Vermont in May 1861 joining Company H. 2nd Infantry and was discharged for disability in September 1863 the regiment having seen arduous service in the 6th Corps as part of the famous Vermont Brigade. Subsequently Chase re-enlisted in (Vermont) Company F. 1st USSS in December 1863 and was wounded at Spotsylvania on May 12 1864. Chase transferred to the VRC in December 1864 and served another 18 months before finally being discharged in August 1866. After the war the veteran soldier never moved far from home. Jonathan Chase died in May 1908 and was buried in the Jay Center Cemetery. Condition: CDV soiled with damaged corners G. Pierced ID disc with only moderate wear on raised eagle brass cleaned ages ago now toning with replacement ring VG+. Ladder badge complete with all chains retaining nearly all of black inpainting on letters and numerals. Wire pin back portion missing still VG.

He attended the Academie Julian in Paris* and the L'Ecole American Beaux Arts* in Fontainebleau. He also studied in Paris with Fernand Leger. From 1948-82, he was Professor of Art at Ohio State University and became a Professor Emeritus there. His printmaking specialty is woodcut* and intaglio*. He lives in Columbus, Ohio.
