FONG CHUNG-RAY (FENG ZHONGRUI)
FONG CHUNG-RAY (FENG ZHONGRUI) PAINTINGFong Chung-Ray (Feng Zhongrui) (Chinese, b. 1934). Large abstract oil on canvas painting titled "29-31," depicting large blocks of cool blue, white, and black. Signed along the lower right. Further titled and signed along the verso.
Regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Chinese painting, Chung-Ray began his formal training at the Cadre College of Arts and Crafts during his time serving in the Taiwanese military. While in the military he gave a false birthdate of one year earlier, 1933, in order to qualify to join. In 1961 he became a member of the Wuyue Group (Fifth Moon Group) and joined them in participating in a multitude of exhibits. Throughout his life, he has experimented with a vast array of mediums from ink to acrylics to oils. The present work is part of his oeuvre occurring after 1989 when he developed a technique in which he applied acrylic paint to plastic sheets and then transferred that work to a sheet of paper. These works combine themes of traditional Chinese painting with Western abstract expressionism, the movement Chung-Ray believes is the closest spiritually to the former.
Unframed; height: 48 in x width: 36 in. Framed; height: 49 1/4 in x width: 37 in.
Condition:
The painting is in good condition overall. There are no areas of restoration or paint loss. The colors are bold and bright. There is an accretion visible under UV along to the left of the signature. There are three areas of brown discoloration, possibly varnish. The verso has dust embedded to the canvas.
