AMERICAN PAINTED MECHANICAL 'A
AMERICAN PAINTED MECHANICAL 'A HEARTFELT GOODBYE' WHIRLIGIG37 x 6 ft. 5 1/4 in. x 5 1/2 in.
Note accompanying this lot from the artist: "For a Captain when it was time to set sail at the wharf saying good bye to his family was a tough and heartfelt time, with the sailors absent for such a long time, Nantucket's women were obligated no only to raise the children but also oversee many of the island's business. It was the women for the most part that kept the Nantucket community functioning during the great 19th century New England whaling era. This piece is carved from 100 year old Pine boards, antique copper and iron is incorporated into the piece, and buttermilk paint is applied in numerous layers to give the piece a time worn appearance.
When the crank is turned it sets life in motion, the ship moves slightly back and forth, the sperm whale below moves about with a slight movement. The husband holds out his hands while his wife holds a heart in her hand. The children move about and look on and say their goodbyes. The angel above watches over the family during his maiden voyage and pray for a safe return home to his loved ones".
Condition
Numerous chips to the "weathered" painted surface. Charming model. Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.

JOHN SUDY (1880-1960)Quail Shooting
JOHN SUDY (1880-1960)Quail Shooting
signed "J. Sudy" lower right
watercolor, 17 3/4 by 23 1/2 in.
titled on label on back
Excerpts from Sudy's obituary reveal that he was born just outside Prague and began his art studies in Berlin at the age of 9. At the outbreak of World War I, he was painting in Rome, when Bohemia, as part of the Austrian empire, went to war against Russia. Sudy would go on to become a captain in the infantry, but when his outfit was captured in the early fighting his unit was shipped to an internment camp in Siberia. As the only officer in the camp, he led a mass escape of 2,300 prisoners. From Siberia the group marched westward and two years later Sudy and four other survivors of the original group arrived in Turkey. There, Sudy painted pictures of veiled dancing girls for British sailors and eventually made enough money to finance a trip to the United States in 1921. Settling on Maryland's Eastern Shore, he began studying and painting wildlife. His works are now held in private collections throughout the US and in Europe. He counted among his close friends such financial greats as J. Pierpont Morgan, John J. Raskob, and George M. Offett.
This well-executed watercolor is perhaps the artist's finest work to ever come to auction.
