RUSSIAN ICON, EARLY 19TH C. "Birth of the Virgin Mary", egg tempera on partial gold leaf ground on wood panel, 11" x 13 1/2". Edge repairs, stabilized, slightly bowed.
St. Anna is represented half reclining on a bed with four handmaidens in attendance. In the foreground the midwife prepares to bathe the infant Virgin. To the right: Praising of the Virgin in which Mary, between her parents, St. Joachim and St. Anna, seated on the steps of Jerusalem, receiving their tender caresses. The top center scene depicts the meeting of St. Joachim and St. Anna, in an embrace at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem. At top left, St. Joachim and at the top right, St. Anna, both of whom are receiving God's guidance for Heavenly Angels.
