The present work is a striking predecessor of William Adolphe Bouguereau's (French 1825-1905) late 19th century works, La Vierge au Lys and La Vierge au Ange. The comparison is necessary. With little to no extraneous details accompanying the figures, the clouds imbue the figures within an eternal timelessness; the work is clearly meant to evoke spiritual contemplation. Sometimes interpreted as the "Lady of the Apocalypse" mentioned in Revelations 12, her crown of stars is unusual, and overall this is a lovely devotional and religious work of art.
