19th century niche with saint, an old saint depicted wearing a mitre, a cape (representing purity), holding a hammer and a crosier, cat at his feet, representing lust and the saint's victory over this vice, polychromed terra cotta, metal, paper, glass jewels, Continental, figure 14-1/4 in., niche 25-1/2 x 17 x 11-1/2 in. Figure with repaired corner at base, wear to paint surface.

JEAN BAPTISTE CôTé (1834-1907) PANELA plaque carved in high relief as part of a series of the 14 Stations of the Cross, attributed to Jean Baptiste Côté (1834-1907) and written in marker on the back. Several plaques from the same group are known, all with evidence of fire damage and having varying degrees of scorched and bubbled paint. Each is originally inscribed on the back in Roman numerals with its number in the series -- this one is #XI, preparing for the crucifixion. As-found condition with smoke damage and blistering of original paint; a hand is missing on the figure at the right. Quebec, 1870-80. FRANCAIS: Plaque sculptée en haut-relief d'une série des 14 Chemins de Croix, attribuée à Jean Baptiste Côté (1834-1907) inscrit au feutre au verso. Quelques plaques du même groupe sont connues, toutes présentant des signes de dommages causés par le feu avec divers degrés de peinture brûlée et bouillonnante. Chacune à son numéro de série d'origine inscrit au dos -- celle-ci est #XI, représentant la deuxième chute du Christ portant la croix. État tel que trouvé avec dommages par la fumée et des cloques sur la peinture d'origine, une main manque sur la figure de droite. Québec, fin 19e siècle. 13" x 12".
