SELECTMEN OF SALEM, MA, DS, 1793 Handwritten resolution of the Selectmen of Salem, Massachusetts, dated July 10, 1793; 1 p., folio, 12 3/8 x 7 1/2 in.; naming 15 men (one woman's name scratched out) as qualified "Retailers of Spiritous Liquors" during the upcoming year; signed by Elias Hasket Derby Jr. (1766-1826, merchant sea captain, introduced merino sheep to US); Edward Norris (a shipmaster); Jonathan Waldo; and Jacob Sanderson (a cabinetmaker). Endorsed by J. Osgood, town clerk, as 3 of the licensees swore the required oath.

1779 SALEM MASSACHUSETTS SIGNED SAMPLERby Sarah "Sally" Williams (Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, born March 3, 1767 - died October 10, 1850), dated June 1779 at age 13, with the verse "This/Needle Work of/Mine Can Tell Wh/en a Child was Le/arned Well By My/Elders I Was Taugh/t Not To Spend My/Time For Nought", with figures, sheep, and spotted dog standing in a grassy landscape with flowers, in "Salem long-stitch style" in crinkly silk attributed to Sarah Stivour's school (1778-1788), on linen, sight 19-7/8 x 16-3/4 in.; wood frame, 21-1/2 x 18-1/4 in.
Note: Written inscription verso reads "Sarah (Williams) Hodges/wife of Gamaliel Hodges/born in Salem March 3 -1767-/your great great grandmother"
Sarah Williams was the daughter of Captain William Williams and Abigail Williams. Sarah Williams married Captain Gamliel Hodges in 1788, and had three children: John Hodges, Gamaliel Hodges, and Margaret Manning Choate.
