AN UNUSUAL SAMPSON HANCOCK MODEL OF THE HEAD OF A MAN
with moulded brown curly hair and rosy cheeks, 3.5cm h, red painted mark, c1900
It has been suggested that this curious object may portray Sampson Hancock. The presence of three small holes for mounting might suggest that it was intended to cap a parasol/cane handle or pin cushion.

Provenance: Emily Gertrude Haslam (1875-1953) daughter of Dr John Haslam (b1844). The Haslams were a prosperous family of engineers who owned a factory next to the King Street China Works. They lived in St Helen's House, Derby and the children played in the factory yard.

Pair of Flintlock Pocket Pistols by Hewson of London .50 bore diameter ? 4.25" octagonal barrels locks marked Hewson.?Forward-action flintlocks with safeties. ?Engraved breech engraved triggerguard and ferules.? Checkered walnut stocks with silver escutcheon.Thomas William Hewson was born in the British Isles about 1778. In 1811 he is recorded as a gunsmith working in No. 36 Piccadilly London. In 1820 at the age of 42 Hewson his wife Elizabeth son Edwin Benjamin (age 19) three daughters and 3-year-old Frederick emigrated to South Africa on the ship Chapman. After landing in Port Elizabeth they were transported to their alloted land on the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony. Hewson took with him a working capital of 1000 pounds ?and seems to have continued his trade when he arrived at his new home. His older son Edwin had also trained as a gunsmith by this time. Condition: Barrels have a light pitting and gunmetal grey.? Locks are very sharp and crisp and gunmetal grey.? Stocks are excellent with minimal nicks and dings.

An unusually lengthy appeal to service by Benjamin Franklin Chief of Detective Police Mayor's Office Philadelphia including testimonials to the character of the men already enlisted (dated February 1865) and a detailed breakdown of the pay. 12 x 19 in. housed in two-sided frame 14.75 x 22.25 in. overall. Condition: Scattered stains chipping at edges and separation at fold lines.

HORTON (incuse) with additional mark for Wood & Hughes, New York; and 6 dessert spoons marked HORTON & RIKEMAN in rectangles. 21.86 total troy ounces for 17 pieces. Note: H.P. Horton worked in Savannah c. 1850 on his own and in partnership with a Mr. Rikeman circa 1850-1856. 2nd grouping (12 pcs): 6 tablespoons and 6 forks, all with incuse marks S.P. HAMILTON along with marks for Gorham and "sterling", monogrammed RWH. 21.9 total troy ounces for 12 pieces. Note: Samuel P. Hamilton served on the staff of CSA Col. Lawton of the Georgia Battalion. According to family genealogy and the book "Historical Record of the City of Savannah" (F.D. Lee and J.L. Agnew, 1869), he operated a jewelry store at the corner of Congress, Whitaker & St. Julian Streets in Savannah from 1862-1889. Ranging in size from 5 7/8" to 8 3/4" L. Provenance note: Acquired by descent from the estates of Robert William Hardwick (1849-1883) and Thomas W. Hardwick (1824-1888).
