LATE EDO JAPANESE SAMURAI HELMET Circa 1840 Samurai Kabuto from set of Tachi Tosei Gusoku Armor, having a Shikoru or neck guard of flexible laced lacquered iron Kozane or neck scales, fabric lined iron dome with bronze and gilt bronze decorations, including a top port for pom, mounted with deer antlers, silk adorned Fukigaeshi or blowbacks and Mabisashi or visor, silk chin cords intact, missing the Daimyo Maedate or badge from the front, probably removed after the fall of the Shogunate in 1876. On a modern black painted museum stand.

SAMURAI ARMOR. Japan 19th century. Lacquered metal plate cuirass and helmet. The cuirass has partial tassets with dark blue lacing and hinged shoulder straps. The helmet has a neck guard and red lacquered chin guard. Sleeve armor for both arms and two greaves. The sleeves have blue cloth lacquered metal strips and chain mail the greaves have lacquered metal strips and small metal plates sewn into gold colored cloth. Imperfections. Loss and damage the fabric and lacings are very fragile.

Condition:
The item is in good condition in general with no visible cracks or major losses. Wear throughout. There is a minute dent to the front. Along the exterior and around the edge of the hat, there are several lacquer losses. Heavy wear to the cloth components. No visible sign of restoration under UV light.
