35-Star American Flag Signed Dr.
35-Star American Flag Signed Dr. L.B. Putnam 1866 Wool bunting 72.5 x 115 in. with 35 hand-sewn single-applique cotton stars configured in 6/6/6/5/6/6 horizontal rows. The fly is constructed of 13 machine-stitched wool bunting stripes. The canvas hoist includes 3 whip-stitched eyelets and is signed along the lower margin on front and top right on back Dr. L.B. Putnam 1866. Historical records list a Dr. L. B. Putnam (1827-1895) who was the grandson of Gideon Putnam an early and prominent settler of Saratoga Springs New York. While the Saratoga Springs newspaper records L.B. Putnam's participation in efforts to welcome back the 30th New York Regiment from the Civil War no records have been found at this time to indicate Dr. Putnam serving at Shiloh or during the Civil War. Dr. Putnam appears to have been a dentist with a store in Saratoga Springs NY. The flag was obtained from a Florida estate.
