Attributed John Sartain (American, 1808-1897) Sketch of a Frog, Sartain was a noted Philadelphia artist and printmaker who pioneered mezzotint engraving, watercolor on paper, inscribed July 1831, unsigned, label on reverse, inscribed "From the Sketch Book of Paul Sartain 1808-1897 burn in London, bought by Marguerite Jolene May 25 1847", although this label misattributes it to Paul the biographical information is for John, measures 3-7/8" x 6-5/8" sheet, framed 7-5/8" x 10-1/4", good condition

FRANCIS SARTORIUS, THE ELDER (ENGLAND, 1734-1804)FRANCIS SARTORIUS, THE ELDER (England, 1734-1804) oil on canvas, "Atlas a (Hunter) the Property of Charles Edwin, Esqr." bay hunter horse with groom and dogs. Signed "F. Sartorius" lower right, dated 1779. Image measures 35.75" x 39.75". In a gilt wood frame; 39.25" x 43.5" overall. Charles Edwin Esquire, the owner of the horse and a wealthy gentleman, ran for Parliament in 1741 with Admiral Vernon against incumbents Sir Charles Wagner and Lord Sundon. Lord Sundon used military force to close the polls and started a riot. A petition was brought to Commons to void the election and was passed by a vote of 220 to 216. Edwin and Vernon ran uncontested in the new election. Francis Sartorius is from a family of artists and is known for equestrian scenes. Provenance: purchased in 1964 from Tillou Gallery, Buffalo, New York; purported to be from the collection of the Duke of Portland.
