ROSS GORMAN'S SAXOPHONE Selmer Alto Saxophone Series 1922, s/n 774, gold plated and engraved with the name of the famed Big Band reed player Ross Gorman, used by Nathan Gordon, the second owner and father of consignor in the making of the first talkie movie 'The Jazz Singer' with Al Jolson. Gorman played with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, is best remembered for his clarinet glissando ad lib at the beginning of Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' on Feb 12, 1924, at the Aeolian Hall in NYC, which Gershwin then wrote into the piece. In the original case, with the original metal mouthpiece. Playable; corrosion around band loop; wear to finish from use; case interior and exterior wear.

If you can't spare it jus listen, What you drop, you get" Signed and dated Roy Ferdinand (copyright) 99, lower right. Housed and mounted in a contemporary wooden frame. Sight: 28" H x 22" W. Framed: 32" H x 26" W. Biographical note: Self-taught artist Roy Ferdinand was known for portraying the street life and characters from some of New Orleans toughest neighborhoods. He died of cancer at the age of 45.
The personal collection of former Folk/Outsider Art dealer Jamie Teal, Nashville, Tennessee; acquired directly from the artist.
Condition:
Overall good condition with light creasing and wear to edges. Float mounted. Frame in overall good condition, some grime on interior of glass.

TWO ALTO SAXOPHONES BY LEBLANC AND PAUL GERARD; Leblanc ''Vito'' brass color with silver highlights complete in fitted case; Paul Gerard manufactured in Paris France lacking mouth piece; both have mother of pearl buttons. The Leblanc saxophone is in good condition with light wear throughout and a few scratches from light use and the mouth piece has a small amount of pitting to the metal.? The Gerard saxophone shows moderate to heavy wear with dings dents scratches loss to the finish some oxidation and it does not have a mouth piece.
