LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY MACHINE
LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY MACHINE LOOMED PAISLEY SHAWL 5' x 9'8'': This large Paisley or piano shawl's design came from hand woven shawls made in India that were worn for warmth and status by men. The name Paisley comes from the town in Scotland where machine loomed versions of the shawls were made. These were worn in England and the U.S. by women or were draped over the family piano in the home. The design of the shawl is a traditional elongated large paisley or boteh design around a small black center. The side end borders are composed of small colorful panels of patterns that are different than the field. This shawl has been backed with black material.CONDITION: There are some areas of wear and damage around the center.
