Co. of Waterbury, CT, along with two at cuffs, one at each belt loop, two at collars and two at back, cotton padded lining, all hand stitched, dark brown inner peplum, 16" shoulders with epaulette loops, 32" waist, 20" sleeves, 27" length. Trousers in pale blue coarse wool with black metal buttons, 26" waist, 30" inseam, 40" length. Moth damage.

A very rare and unusual Union case with original daguerreotype image within, produced c. 1855 with an original daguerreotype by Samuel Broadbent, American Victorian daguerreotypist and photographer whose work can be found in collections including at the Getty Museum. The elaborate exterior has motifs of scrolls and stylized floral designs. The interior has a burgundy velvet interior panel facing the daguerreotype, which is presented in a gilt metal frame with profuse floral decoration and is stamped S BROADBENT. The case interior is pencil signed and dated AUGUST 1856. Metal locking clasp. Missing hinges. Wear to case.

JOHN MERCER BROOKE United StatesC. 1840s-50sDark blue superfine broadcloth body, gold metallic lace around the collar and cuffs, Scovill back marked navy buttons, white silk lining with padding in the breast, marked "Lt JM Brooke" in iron gall ink on a tab on the neck, and silk lining in the sleeves. Note: John Mercer Brooke (1826-1906) was born in Tampa, Florida. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1847 becoming a lieutenant. He worked on many projects for the U.S. Navy including finding the shape of the sea bottom and mapping as well as having a part in the transatlantic cable. In 1861, he resigned his commission and joined the Virginia navy and served for the Confederacy. He worked on converting the USS Merrimac to the CSS Virginia, and invented the Brooke rifle. He served until the surrender of Confederate forces and asked President Andrew Johnson for a pardon. After the war he became a professor at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia and died there in 1906.

The objects include Dutch or African clear glass trade beads, clambroth trade beads, turquoise blue glass African trade beads, African copper tube-form trade beads, early 19th century JE RENAIS DE Mes Cendres French Haitian military buttons, an uncut brass key, corroded brass ball-shape baubles or buttons, brass thimbles drilled and fitted with a suspended brass bead inside to create a tinkler bell, Chinese brass or bronze coins, a circa 1870 Scovill-type brass American artillery button and brass rings.Necklace length measures 56.5, key pendant is 2.75 x 1 inches.The condition is as shown noting that three pieces have come loose since photography and the cords are extremely fragile.Provenance: The 40 year collection of Father Tom Wiederholt, Kansas City, Missouri. Tom was a close personal friend of scholar and curator Ralph 'Ted' Coe who advised Tom on most of his acquisitions.
