George Rodrigue
George Rodrigue (American/Louisiana, b. 1944) "Return of the Loup Garou", 1993, oil on linen, 24" x 20", signed lower left "Rodrigue", verso with inventory label "13. Return of the Loup Garou". Presented in a contemporary black lacquered frame. Provenance: Purchased by the current owner from the Galerie Blue Dog, Munich, Germany. It was the legendary tale of the "Loup Garou", a werewolf-type dog, which inspired George Rodrigue's famous series, The Blue Dog. In 1984, Rodrigue was asked to illustrate a book of Cajun ghost stories written by Chris Segura entitled "Bayou". He searched for an appropriate image for the "Loup Garou" and found his muse in his mutt terrier Tiffany who had died several years before. The image of this blue, scrappy dog with a stunned and intense gaze soon dominated his canvases of Louisiana landscapes. Rodrigue's Louisiana: Cajuns, Blue Dogs, and Beyond Katrina, a forty-year retrospective of George Rodrigue's works is on view at the New Orleans Museum of Art through June 8, 2008.
